Usual pattern (not a live status)
The road is open year-round but does require careful driving during winter conditions.
About this place
An 18-mile loop through prairie and pine hills in Custer State Park. SD GFP says to allow about 1 hour 30 minutes, depending on "wildlife jams", and puts the free-roaming bison herd at about 1,350.
SD GFP says the best wildlife viewing is early in the morning or late in the evening, just before sunset.

Winter notes
- SD GFP: "The road is open year-round but does require careful driving during winter conditions." We show that as the usual pattern, not as a live status.
- The Wildlife Station Visitor Center is seasonal; the tourism board lists its 2026 closing date as Sept 27.

How we check
Game, Fish & Parks describes the road as open year-round. We show that as the usual pattern, not as current status, because winter storms can still close park roads and no live notice is published. Closed only on an explicit official closure notice that names the Wildlife Loop. We check official sources about once a day; see our method.
