About Black Hills Open Now and how we check
Black Hills Open Now is an automated daily check of official pages plus written notes. There is no named author or local expert behind it. It covers places only (roads, caves, parks, memorials), not events.
The safety rule
- Open only when an official source gives an explicit positive reading for today: a published NPS schedule for today with no closure alert, or, for state-highway drives, an explicit passable SD511 road condition (see below). Never from the mere absence of a closure.
- Closed only on explicit closure wording from an official source (SD511/SDDOT, NPS alert, or the park).
- Partly open when official wording says some parts or tours are closed and others run.
- Unknown in every other case: the page could not be fetched, robots.txt disallows it, the layout or wording changed, the expected words are missing, or the wording is unclear or contradictory. Unknown always points you to SD511 and the park's own page.
- Seasonal roads are not marked Open just because a page says they "usually" open. That wording is shown separately as the usual pattern.
- The last confirmed status is shown separately with its date and is never presented as current. If a check is more than 36 hours old, pages show every status as Unknown.
Road rule: SD511 road conditions
- Roads that are state highways (Needles Highway SD 87, Iron Mountain Road US 16A, Spearfish Canyon US 14A, Badlands Loop Road SD 240) use the SD511 road-condition layer from SDDOT. That is the same data the public SD511 map shows. Custer State Park's own page tells visitors to check SD511 for the current status of its scenic drives.
- Open: every SD511 road-condition segment we map to the road reports an explicit passable condition (Dry/Normal, Scattered Wet or Wet; for US 14A and SD 240 winter conditions such as Snow/Ice also count, labeled "open with winter conditions"), the SD511 file was updated within the last 6 hours, and no official source we check (SD511 closures and events, NPS alerts, recent SDDOT press releases) reports a closure. We never call a road open just because no closure is posted.
- Closed: SD511 marks the segment Closed/Blocked/Impassable, or an SD511 closure event falls within the road's mile markers. Partly open: only some of the road's segments are closed.
- Unknown: the files can't be read, are stale or have changed layout; a segment has no condition or says "No Travel Advised"; Needles or Iron Mountain Road shows winter conditions; sources disagree (for example an NPS closure alert while SD511 shows the road passable); a closure has no mile marker; or (Needles only) the date falls between December 1 and March 31, when Game, Fish & Parks says the road stays closed after the first snow until April 1 or later.
- Each road status cites the exact SD511 segment (id, description, mile range and condition code) and the time SD511 last updated the file. Current SD511 restrictions, such as width limits or construction near the road, are listed under the status. Road conditions can change within hours; the status reflects SD511 at our check time, shown on each page.
- Wildlife Loop Road (inside Custer State Park) and Sage Creek Rim Road (a gravel road in Badlands National Park) have no SD511 road-condition segment, so they stay Unknown unless an official closure is posted.
Sources
- National Park Service: alerts (NPS public data API) and hours/tour pages for Mount Rushmore, Wind Cave, Jewel Cave and Badlands.
- SD511 (SDDOT): the public road-condition files behind the SD511 map (condition by segment, segment list, event lines), the obstruction, disturbance and restriction feeds, and SDDOT press releases. Some other SD511 feeds refuse automated requests; we do not work around that.
- SD Game, Fish & Parks Custer State Park scenic drives page.
- The Crazy Horse Memorial site (often unreadable by automated checks; then it shows Unknown).
Polite fetching
The checker identifies itself (BlackHillsOpenNow/1.0 (+https://blackhills-open-now.pages.dev/about/)), respects robots.txt, sends one request at a time per site with a delay of at least 3 seconds, uses timeouts and caching, and runs about once a day.
Opening history and month notes
History tables list only dates we read on official pages, with the source and the date we read it. When we have little history, the page says so. Month-by-month crowd and season notes are general estimates, not measured data.
Limits
This site can be wrong, late or incomplete. Conditions change faster than a daily check. It gives no guarantees and no legal, safety, medical or financial advice. Always confirm with the official source, and call the park if in doubt.
