Winter notes
- Game, Fish & Parks says the highway closes to vehicles with the first snow of the season and does not reopen until April 1, or later depending on conditions.
- When it is closed to vehicles and conditions are right, it is open for hiking, biking, snowshoeing and skiing (SD GFP).
- For a winter drive in the park, Game, Fish & Parks describes the Wildlife Loop Road as open year-round.
Opening and closing history
| Date | What happened | Official source |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 6, 2026 | Needles Eye and Iron Creek tunnel section closed for most of the day for scheduled SDDOT tunnel inspections (Hood Tunnel: flagger delays). | SDDOT press release, Sept 24, 2026 (read Oct 31, 2026) |
We have not yet found a dated official notice of this year's seasonal closing or last spring's opening. Game, Fish & Parks states the pattern (closes with the first snow, reopens April 1 or later) but does not publish exact dates on that page. New dated notices will be added as the daily check finds them. Only dates read on official pages are listed; we do not fill gaps with guesses.

How we check
Open when every SD511 road-condition segment for SD 87 from Jct US 16A to Jct SD 89 (the Needles section) reports an explicit passable condition (Dry/Normal or Wet) in a file updated within 6 hours, and no SD511 closure, NPS alert or recent SDDOT release reports a closure. Closed when SD511 marks it Closed/Blocked/Impassable or posts a closure within those mile markers. Unknown with winter conditions, between December 1 and March 31, or when anything is missing or conflicting. We check official sources about once a day; see our method.
