About this place
The main visitor center in the North Unit of Badlands National Park, at park headquarters on the Badlands Loop Road (25216 Ben Reifel Road, Interior). NPS lists a ranger information desk, museum exhibits, the park film, a working Fossil Preparation Lab and the park bookstore.
NPS says the park itself is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with entrance fees collected year-round. This page is about the visitor center building only; for the drive, see the Badlands Loop Road page.
Hours note: the dated NPS hours for Sept 27, 2026 – May 3, 2027 are 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. daily, but an undated NPS "things to do" page says the visitor center is open 7am–7pm in summer, 8am–5pm in fall and spring and 8am–4pm in winter. We follow the dated hours for Open, and show Unknown for the times where the two NPS pages disagree. Call (605) 433-5361 if you are cutting it close.

How we check
Uses the dated hours NPS posts for the Ben Reifel Visitor Center (NPS visitor center data, the same hours shown on the NPS hours page). Open only during today's dated posted hours, with no NPS alert about a visitor center or park closure. Closed on a day the dated hours list as Closed (for example a holiday), and before the earliest or after the latest time in any hours NPS posts for this building. Unknown if no dated hours cover today, if the hours can't be read, if two NPS hour notes disagree for that time of day, or if a closure alert's wording is unclear. We check official sources about once a day; see our method.
